What is a power of attorney?

A Power of Attorney allows you to appoint someone to make decisions on your behalf. The person appointed in the power of attorney is called an agent. What makes a power of attorney durable is its ability to still be valid when the principal (you) are incapacitated. Powers of attorney are extremely beneficial if you are incapacitated because your agent can step in your shoes and take care of your finances and property and all of your affairs continue as if nothing happened to you. Here in Louisiana, with regards to some actions, the power of attorney has to specifically state what agent can do or else the agent cannot do the action. You are always within your right to change your mind, so you can change your agent, change what your agent is allowed to do or revoke the power of attorney all together.
